Every morning I wake up after a few snooze hits, and head to the kitchen to make my girlfriend and I our morning cups of coffee. It’s been my routine for over a year and she’s been drinking coffee for many years. But while my coffee is brewing I began to wonder. I drink this coffee every single morning sometimes 2 – 3 cups on days I’m exhausted and I don’t even know how it effects my body. I know there are many people who have this same routine in the morning and are probably wondering the same thing. There are both positive and negative impacts of coffee and I wanted to share some of the health effects of coffee I found.
Coffee may be preserving your liver.
A recent study found a correlation between drinking both coffee and tea and a healthier liver. This may not be proof of cause-and-effect, but it is a strong link between the two. The reason involves the fact that coffee has compounds of tissue protecting effects and the liver may directly benefit from these compounds. After all, your liver is your body’s filtration system, so definitely one of the positive health effects of coffee.
Coffee lowers your risk of cancers.
This study shows that coffee may be decreasing of men developing prostate cancer by 20% and endometrial cancer in women by 25%! That study tested men and women that drank 4 cups of coffee per day. That’s more than I personally drink on an average day, but those numbers are impressive. Also, increased caffeine intake is associated with reduced risk of basal cell carcinoma (Skin Cancer).
Coffee reduces illnesses that effect the brain.
Regular coffee drinkers have lowered Parkinson’s disease risk by 25% due to the activity coffee causes in the affected part of the brain. High caffeine levels in your blood has also been found to lower the risk of Alzheimer disease and lowers risk of dementia. Our brains are the boss our bodies and controls everything we do, and I personally want to ensure I do everything I can to lower my risks in any way.
Coffee may provide protection against diabetes.
Another finding in the pro-coffee category shows that daily drinkers could have a decreased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. It seems that coffee may protect cells from the accumulation of toxin proteins that play a role in the development of diabetes. Now, we all know those coffee drinkers that prefer “a little coffee with their sugar.” This is counter productive for this positive impact but definitely related to the talk on the health effects of coffee.
Now that we have covered the positives of drinking coffee, it’s time to look at the negatives. I know, no one wants to look into the negative impacts of their daily routine. However, it’s necessary to ensure we have all of the facts.
Coffee can cause insomnia.
Drinking caffeinated coffee later in the day is not helpful in the fight of insomnia. The half life of caffeine is about 6 hours. This means it takes 6 hours to eliminate about half of the chemical from your system. It is a surprisingly enduring chemical. Therefore, after 2 pm it would be best to switch to decaf to ensure you’re not impacted by this negative.
Coffee can trigger anxiety.
It’s a little unfair to put the blame on coffee for this one since anything with caffeine can impact our bodies this way. Since most people get their daily dose from their morning cup of Joe, it has to be included in our list. If you suffer from anxiety, it is important to sip wisely and not chug your coffee.

Coffee can negatively impact your stomach.
If Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is an issue for you, it may be a good idea to at least limit your intake. Coffee is highly acidic and can cause heartburn even if you don’t have this disease. Decaf won’t be able to help you in this situation either. Acid reflux is also not a friend of coffee, so it’s important to consider this.
How many people besides your Great-Grandmother drinks their coffee black? There’s not many. Although there are more positive health effects of coffee drank black, most people don’t drink it that way. Most people add creamer, whipped cream, sugar or even different syrups if you purchase your coffee at a shop. These calories can add up quickly if not tracked or managed properly. The more simple your coffee is, the better it will be for you.
Health Effects Of Coffee Are Various
All in all, in order to avoid the majority of the negative impacts of coffee you would need manage your intake. Ensuring you’re consuming your daily dose before 2 pm or switching to decaf can help resist insomnia. Excess caffeine of any kind can induce anxiety and the negative health effects of coffee. If you do struggle with this, make sure you are sipping cautiously and not all at once. If you have stomach issues, it could be necessary to speak with your doctor about your intake and see if it’s something you need to sacrifice. Lastly, the more simple your coffee is, the better it is for you. Try to cut back on sugars and excess creams.
At the end of the day, each person reacts differently to caffeine. If you find yourself wondering if you need to cut back on consumption, consider slowing down a cup here. That way you can reach your goal. It’s also important to consider that coffee isn’t the only source of caffeine. Soda and chocolate are also contributors to your intake, so take that with a grain of salt. It’s is a decision you make for yourself and if you find these negative impacts popping up, you can try to adjust your intake accordingly.
